Ana Mendieta

Las obras de Ana Mendieta fueron autobiográficas y enfocadas en temas como el feminismo , la violencia, la vida, la muerte, el lugar y la pertenencia. Mendieta se ha concentrado en una relación física y espiritual con la Tierra, muy especialmente en su serie «Silueta» (1973-1980). Dicha serie implicó la representación de siluetas femeninas en la naturaleza —en barro, arena y hierba— con materiales naturales que iban desde hojas y ramas, hasta sangre, imprimiéndolo en su cuerpo o pintando su silueta en una pared.

Mendieta's work was generally autobiographical and focused on themes including feminism, violence, life, death, place and belonging. Her works are generally associated with the four basic elements of nature. Mendieta often focused on a spiritual and physical connection with the Earth.The Silueta Series (1973–1980) involved Mendieta creating female silhouettes in nature - in mud, sand and grass - with natural materials ranging from leaves and twigs to blood, and making body prints or painting her outline or silhouette

Hannah Wilke is recognized as a pioneer of feminist art, though in her time her confrontational use of her own body and satire of glamour modeling sometimes put her at odds with the feminist community. The artist was among the first to explore “essentialist art”, tying the female experience to the image of the vagina, which she rendered in folded clay, hanging latex, kneaded erasers, chewed bubble gum, or rolled-up laundry lint and stuck to photographs, postcards, and her body by the dozens. Her interest in the body took a somber turn as she documented her own battle with cancer.
